IS 10500 limits: iron 0.3 mg/L (acceptable) / 1.0 (permissible), fluoride 1.0 / 1.5 mg/L, arsenic 0.01 mg/L. Iron stains, tastes metallic and clogs pipes; fluoride above 1.5 mg/L causes dental and skeletal fluorosis; arsenic is a carcinogen with no safe permissible relaxation. Jal Jeevan Mission and state schemes fund treatment at village and multi-village scale — the design has to work with intermittent power, minimal operators and local materials.
Aeration followed by catalytic-media filtration — no chemicals except occasional chlorine, backwash with the same water, and it works with 4–6 hours of power a day.
Yes — activated alumina and Nalgonda processes work for fluoride up to ~5–8 mg/L at community scale; RO is used where TDS is also high or fluoride is very high.
