Cooling Tower Water Treatment

Scale, corrosion, fouling and biology — the four things that quietly steal heat-transfer efficiency and shorten the life of every cooling system. We control all four.

Why cooling water needs treatment

A cooling tower concentrates whatever is in its make-up water. As water evaporates, hardness, silica, chloride and sulphate climb with every cycle of concentration; warm, aerated, nutrient-rich water is also the ideal home for algae, bacteria and Legionella. Left alone, the result is scale on condenser tubes (a 1 mm calcium carbonate layer can cut heat transfer by 10 % or more), corrosion of carbon steel and copper alloys, biofilm that insulates and corrodes, and fouling that blocks fill and nozzles.

Cooling water treatment is the combination of make-up water quality, mechanical filtration, chemical dosing and blowdown control that keeps the system clean at the lowest total cost of water, chemicals and energy. We design it as a system, not as a chemical programme sold by the drum.

  1. Make-up water treatmentSoftening, RO or partial RO on make-up raises achievable cycles of concentration and cuts blowdown; iron and silica removal where the source demands.
  2. Side-stream filtrationAutomatic multimedia, sand or screen filters treating 3–10 % of recirculation flow continuously — removes airborne dust, corrosion products and biological debris.
  3. Scale and corrosion controlPhosphonate, polymer and azole inhibitor programmes dosed proportionally to make-up or blowdown, with pH control where required.
  4. Microbiological controlOxidising biocide (chlorine, bromine, chlorine dioxide) on a controlled ORP or timer basis, with non-oxidising biocide shots; Legionella risk assessment and monitoring.
  5. Cycles of concentration controlConductivity-based automatic blowdown holds the sweet spot between water waste and scaling risk.
  6. Blowdown treatment and recoveryRO or softening on blowdown returns 60–80 % as make-up; reject to ETP or ZLD where discharge is restricted.
  7. Monitoring and automationOnline conductivity, pH, ORP, corrosion coupons or probes, flow-proportional dosing, remote alarms and monthly reports.

Where we apply it

Process industries
Pharma, chemical, textile and food plants with evaporative cooling for reactors, chillers and compressors.
Power and captive generation
Condenser cooling for thermal and captive power; high-cycles operation with make-up RO.
Data centres and commercial HVAC
Chiller condenser water with strict uptime, Legionella control and water-efficiency targets — see our dedicated data centre water treatment page.
Refineries and petrochemicals
Large open recirculating systems with hydrocarbon leak risk and high corrosion stakes.
Steel, cement and metals
Direct and indirect cooling with high suspended solids; heavy side-stream filtration.

How KK Enviro Engineers delivers

Water audit — make-up analysis, system volume, heat load, current cycles and chemical spend → treatment design and water balance → supply of filtration, dosing and RO skids → commissioning and programme setup → monthly O&M with reports. We also take over and optimise cooling systems already under another vendor's programme.

Frequently asked questions

How many cycles of concentration should a cooling tower run?

Typically 4–8 with raw make-up water and up to 10–15 with softened or RO make-up. The limit is set by the scaling index of the concentrated water — we calculate it from your make-up analysis.

What is side-stream filtration and do I need it?

A filter that continuously treats 3–10 % of the recirculating flow, removing suspended solids that scrub into the tower from air and corrosion. Almost every open cooling system benefits; dusty or biologically active sites cannot run cleanly without it.

How do you control Legionella?

A written risk assessment, controlled oxidising biocide with ORP monitoring, periodic non-oxidising shots, cleanliness of the basin and fill, and regular sampling. Documentation is part of the programme.

Can cooling tower blowdown be reused?

Yes — after softening or RO, 60–80 % of blowdown can return as make-up. The reject goes to the ETP or evaporator.

Cooling system losing efficiency or wasting water?

Send the make-up analysis, system volume and current chemical programme — we reply with a treatment plan and water-saving estimate within one working day.
