Blower types for biological treatment, how they compare, and how to select one that suits your plant.
In an activated sludge, MBBR, SBR or MBR plant, the blowers are usually the largest energy user, often more than half of the plant power. They supply the oxygen the bacteria need to remove BOD and ammonia. A blower that is too large wastes power, one that is too small leaves the plant short of oxygen, and a wrong type can give years of high running cost. The choice depends on the air required, the discharge pressure, how much the load varies, noise limits and maintenance capacity.
| Plant or application | Usual choice |
|---|---|
| Small packaged STP, shallow tank | Regenerative (ring) blower |
| Small to medium MBBR, SBR, MBR plant | Twin-lobe (roots) blower with acoustic enclosure |
| Medium plant where power cost is important | Rotary screw blower |
| Large municipal or industrial plant | Centrifugal (turbo) blower |
| Equalisation tank mixing | Roots blower with coarse-bubble diffusers, or jet aerator |
| Lagoon or shallow aeration pond | Surface aerator |
| Membrane scouring in an MBR | Roots or screw blower sized for the scour air requirement |
We size the air requirement for your plant, select blowers and diffusers, and supply them as part of a plant or on their own, against your specification and approved make list. We can also review an existing plant where power use is high or oxygen is short. Send your plant details. See also mechanical equipment, pumps and MBBR vs SBR vs MBR.
Twin-lobe (roots) blowers are the most common for small and medium STPs because they are simple and sturdy. Rotary screw blowers are more efficient and quieter, and centrifugal (turbo) blowers suit large plants. Very small packaged plants often use regenerative blowers.
A roots blower costs less and is simple to service. A screw blower uses less power and runs quieter. If the blower runs all day and power is expensive, the screw blower often pays back.
It depends on the BOD and ammonia load, diffuser efficiency, tank depth and temperature. We calculate it from your inlet data rather than use a fixed figure.
Usually yes when the load varies or the plant starts below design flow. It saves power and lets the dissolved oxygen follow the load.
Yes. Send the specification and approved make list. If you have none, we propose options and agree the make with you before ordering.
Send the plant flow, BOD and tank depth. We reply within one to two working days.
